Before, most diet pills had one thing in common: they attempted to stop weight gain by liquefying and destroying the fat cells in the body. However, because the pills affect most of the body, it had a lot of side-effects, including nausea, general weakness and fatigue. For other people, the reactions were greater and fear struck the slimming industry when deaths associated with taking diet pills were reported. At present is the age of the new diet pill, which goes straight to the brain and inhibits a person’s appetite so that he/she always feels full. So how exactly does it work and is it safe for general use?
So why do we become hungry in the first place? Well, hunger comes from a process that actually starts in the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus releases certain hormones which send signals to a person’s liver. When we feel like our stomach’s our rumbling, it’s actually our livers that are screaming for food. Unbeknownst to man, feeling hungry does not really mean a person needs to eat. The reason why people eat when they feel hunger is because the feeling is so unpleasant and eating is the only way that abates it. You can survive many days without eating, but the feeling of hunger manifests itself mere hours after you have eaten a full meal.
People who can’t seem to stop eating do so because they easily succumb to the unpleasantness of hunger and want to get rid of that feeling right away. The new diet pill sends signals to brain receptors, which tricks the brain into thinking that the person has eaten. Therefore, the feeling of hunger dissipates even if the person hasn’t actually eaten. With regular use, the person taking the diet pill doesn’t feel hungry even at times when they really need to eat.
The new diet pills on the market, including Lorcaserin and Contrave, all use this method of weight loss, which is basically just helping a person starve him/herself without feeling the side-effect that is hunger pangs. However, the question on everyone’s minds is whether this is a safe approach to weight loss. Tinkering with the brain has always been a bad idea, and even these new diet pills have their fair share of dangers, complications, risks and side effects. Before you can take these pills, you have to have a clean bill of health first. Why? Well because hunger is not just a feeling you get when you need to eat: it can also be a symptom of other sicknesses like problems in the blood sugar level and diseases in the digestive tract. The pills mask the hunger so no symptoms are seen in the person with these types of illnesses until such time that his/her condition worsens.
